Rock salt has been sold out in all stores in the area for the last week, so I got some “water softening pellets,” which are sure fun to attempt to breakup. Then I read all the environmental impacts salting has, plus the corrosion it can do to pavement, etc. Now I’m getting cold feet . So I spread a little kosher salt on my slick steps and kind of just gave up. I’ll just shovel and break up ice like I did last time.
Already snowing pretty good. Oh well.

I didn’t even think about the stores around there not having large stocks of deicer. Salt is definitely not great since it can kill plants and grass but it’s better than killing yourself on ice. Be careful out there.

Once it’s close to 32F you can just use warm tap water to get rid of built up ice. Even below freezing on an area that gets sun, it can be quite effective. If it drains into an area that’s cold or will become cold, though, of course that doesn’t work.

There’s an Ewing landscape supply near you, they’ve got tons of different options for ice management.
Also I've found that the fancy grocery stores are much more likely to have things in stock.

Living in MI for 9 years taught me to hate road salt. Lots of streets, they’d just spread the salt instead of plowing. Ugh.
Here in Dallas, they don’t have enough plows to remove what snow does fall . They just spread sand. It’s pretty worthless.

I use rock salt once. It destroyed
my concrete. Now I use a shovel.

Some salt can start eating into concrete, so maybe double check which one you’re using before tossing it on the driveway.
I have some pitting on my driveway from using water softening salt once.

U
rea-based ice melt is used in aviation to avoid corrosion problems. It isn’t quite as effective as rock salt
and I’m n
ot sure how the price compares
, but might be worth looking into.

They’re using the extreme cold here to test liquid road salt (something-chloride) because actual rock salt doesn’t react in these temps.

Does the hair spray and lighter combo flamethrower do anything in ice and snow like this?
